ARE YOU JUST A NUMBER?

I was on Twitter the other day and I looked at the people in my stream and wondered the following: who the hell are these people? Out of the thousands of people following my account, there are maybe 20 that I even know. My question is: why?

Really. Why do they follow me? Yes, it can be good because you think you’re going to have interaction with people of like-minds. But that’s only if they actually do interact with you. Most people on social media are posting about politics because of the present situation in our country and world. There isn’t much conversation from them because they are interacting about and to government.

The other section of posters are primarily interested in promoting their products, and while there is nothing wrong with that at all, their attention span regarding anything besides their own promotion, is short. The last group are people who are simply trolling and/or may not even have real accounts. Like bots, you are following and friending people who may not even really exist, just for the purpose of someone’s agenda of propaganda.

Based on my personal assessment, the majority of the people who follow me and expect me to follow back are actually not interested in me at all. I am just a number to them. We are not talking with each other, but at each other. If I follow them, and if they think that I’m reading their tweets, then they’re fine. They don’t have to talk to me, write to me, retweet me or converse with me online. I didn’t sign up for that. and I’m not interested in connecting if their sole purpose is to add to their numbers. I am a communicator of this side and the “other” and I always desire ways to one-on-one communicate.

One final question to ask yourself: How many people do I have to unfollow, block, report or unfriend before I realize that I am exposing myself to negativity that will only bring on more of the same to my life. You are not just a number, so don’t make yourself one. That’s a sad way to live, and we can avoid it.
